Scenic Loop Drive (South Unit)

1. Head North on East River Road

• Start at 3576 East River Road South (Boots Campground) and head north toward the South Unit Visitor Center.
  
  
• Once you reach the Visitor Center, merge onto Scenic Loop Drive.
  
  
• Distance: 1.5 miles to the Visitor Center

2. Enter Scenic Loop Drive (Mile 1.5)

• Follow Scenic Loop Drive northbound.
  
  
• Pass by initial viewpoints like Skyline Vista after about 5 miles.
  

3. Boicourt Overlook (Mile 16)

• Continue riding until you reach Boicourt Overlook at mile 16.
  
  
• Optional stop for breathtaking panoramic views of the badlands.
  

4. Wind Canyon Trailhead (Mile 21)

• Continue along Scenic Loop Drive to reach Wind Canyon Trailhead.
  
  
• Briefly stop for photos or explore the short walking trail.
  

5. Optional: Buck Hill Detour (Mile 24)

• At mile 24, take a short detour to Buck Hill, the highest point in the South Unit.
  
  
• Return to the main loop after the detour.
  

6. Descend through Open Prairie (Miles 25–30)

• After Buck Hill, descend gently through the plains and watch for wildlife.
  
  
• Pass Jones Creek Trailhead and Peaceful Valley Ranch as you head south.
  

7. Return to East River Road (Mile 36)

• Complete the loop and exit Scenic Loop Drive back onto East River Road South.
  
  
• Head back south to 3576 East River Road South to complete the loop.
